cylinder with knob vs without

The internal knob on the lock of the entrance door is convenient but dangerous!

One often chooses to install an internal knob on the entrance door so as to be able to also open and close the lock without having to use the key. In effect, the internal knob is convenient, but it also brings an important security issue which should not be underestimated.

The risks of internal knob

A burglar who has entered the house through another access, such as a window or a balcony, can, thanks to the knob, easily open the entrance door from the inside and leave carrying bulky objects with no problem at all, thereby obtaining a dual benefit. On the one hand, the burglar leaves faster and without difficulty, and on the other hand it is less obvious, rather that if forced to exit from where they entered.

On the contrary, if there is no knob, the burglar would be forced to break through, and if he did not do so to enter it will very unlikely he would do so to exit. The burglar would therefore probably leave by the same way he entered. If it is a window or a balcony it would be more difficult to remove large items, such as paintings, televisions, etc. It would also increase the chances of the burglar being noticed by someone and identified as a thief. Let us remember that, in the eyes of a neighbour or passer-by, a person walking out of a door, even if they are carrying bulky objects at unusual times of the day, can be a friend of the owner who is helping during removals, whilst someone doing the same thing coming out of a window or a balcony certainly gives the impression of a thief!

Without a knob, a burglar is forced to exit through an opening other than the entrance door, with a greater risk of being spotted (photo by Flickr/Marshall24 ).

For this reason, the use of cylinders with knobs is only recommended on internal doors and not on main entrance doors.

Three possible alternatives

If you really do not want to lose the convenience of an internal knob you can adopt one of the following solutions.

    1. The first alternative is to use 2 different cylinders, one service cylinder, with a knob, which you use when you are at home, and one security cylinder, without a knob, which locks when you leave. This solution also guarantees greater security, since, if they were both closed, any burglar would have to force two different locks to open the door from the outside.
    2. The second alternative is to use a frictioned cylinder, i.e. a cylinder that allows you to open the door from the outside even if the key is inserted on the inside. With a cylinder of this type you can keep the key inserted when you are at home, so you can easily open and close the lock, just as you would with a knob, and without preventing other persons in possession of the key from opening the door from the outside. The difference compared to the knob is that the key is removed when leaving, thereby avoiding the risk that a burglar can open the door for an easy exit. This solution also has the advantage of allowing us to always know where the keys to the house are, thus avoiding the classic search for the bunch of keys at the last minute when you need to leave.
    3. If, on the other hand, we are sure that when we are at home no one else will need to enter, for example because we live alone, the same thing can be done with a non-frictioned cylinder. In this case, if you have the foresight to slightly turn the key from the inside, you will have the added benefit of preventing the lock from being picked from the outside. If the internal key is turned slightly it makes lock picking and key bumping techniques more complex. It is a different matter for double bit locks, in which it is always recommended that the key not be left inserted on the inside since, paradoxically, this may facilitate forced entry attempts from the outside.
Instead of the knob you can use a key which is removed when you leave. In this case, if you want to keep the possibility of opening the lock even from the outside you must use a frictioned cylinder

Conclusions

As is often the case when it comes to security, a greater convenience may mean a greater potential risk. In the case of internal knob, however, following the tips mentioned above you can achieve both.

It’s nice how you said that security cylinders are nice because they provide greater safety. Having a good door lock service to come and install everything. That way you can be sure that it has been installed in a way that it won’t be easily broken into.

My husband and I are building our dream house, so I wanted tips on locks and knobs we should use. I didn’t think about the security there is if there isn’t a knob and a burglar would have to leave the same way they came if they broke in. I’ll have to show this to my husband and ask the residential lock service we hire what type of doorknob is the most secure, thanks to this post!

      Dear Sarah,
first of all, a simple tip is locking the door every time. Indeed, many people just shut the door without locking it, as they think they are going out just for a little while and everything is going to be all right when they’ll come back. To avoid facilitating the way out to the burglar is recommended to use a double cylinder and following what is specified in this post.

I like the idea of having 2 cylinders so that the burglar has to go through two locks to get into my home. I’m designing a new house and I want it to be as secure as possible. I’ve already got some security cameras in place, but that won’t mean anything without some decent locks. Thanks for writing this helpful article!
